We met at Beall`s Outlet in Venice (across from the hospital). I was your cashier that day. Keep on writing those articles! Tonight I read about your experience with the church that celebrated Halloween. My experiences with so-called "holidays" and things like Harry Potter promotions do present both a challenge and a chance to witness.
The world today is so blind to the origins of the so-called "Christian" holidays they celebrate. What`s more, when discussions arise and I give them my opinions as to why I don`t participate in a lot of holidays/traditions because of the compromise made to "Christianize" pagan celebrations that were observed (trying to "win over" pagans or make new converts more comfortable in transition, or both?) I get the strangest reactions. Some people are disinterested and others are taken aback and seem to be afraid to bring up the subject again. A customer at Publix (my day job---same shopping center) asked me repeatedly why I wasn`t dressed up for Halloween and I politely told him that it was against my religious beliefs. His eyes just opened wide and he wouldn`t even let me go out to his car with his groceries.
Whenever I talk about such subjects I`m not putting on a superior or holier-than-thou attitude, either. I just quietly explain my position. As Christians, we need to constantly remember (some need to wake up and smell the coffee first!) that we are "in" the world and not "of" the world, also, even though Jesus said the world would hate us we need to stand strong and not compromise.
You are an encouragement to me. Hope to see you soon. The weather`s finally autumn-like. May God continue to bless you and your ministry.
I think your assessment is correct and do pray that we in the church come to our senses - or at least to our knees sometime soon. When you read the story of the ten virgins, they were all waiting for the Bridegroom but only five went away with him. If this is indeed a picture of the church it should set off an alarm. I do not know the Pastor you are speaking about but should I walk in his church someday and see his "heroes" I would probably ask him why he does not have pictures of the true heroes of the faith, those mentioned in Hebrews yes; but what about all those that are being persecuted for their faith throughout the world? Are they not more deserving than a cartoon character? What about the missionaries who are on the front lines bringing the Gospel to those who have never heard it? Maybe we are just taking our faith too seriously and need to lighten up. I must say that I am quite sure this Pastor is not the only Pastor that is missing the mark.
Our feet are supposed to bring the Good News wherever God places them. To some this sounds good and is a sweet aroma of life and to others it will cause anger as their death draws all the more clearer. Let you and I never back down from the Gospel and in love correct, teach and rebuke. Keep up the good work Ms. Donna and be encouraged on your journey.
