How Does God Spend His Time?

 Print

Weīve all had these various erroneous ideas of what God does. Everything from images of him sitting on a cloud counting angels to Him casting lightening bolts across the sky when irked and provoked. Angels, I assure you, do not get misplaced, therefore an inventory does not have to be taken at the turn of each new century. Now for the dynamics, components and understanding of thunder and lightening, youīll have to consult your nearest encyclopedia because time and space and my limited knowledge do not permit for an in-depth expose here.

To obtain knowledge and understanding and a concise portrayal of Godīs attributes, though, we need to turn to another book. Psalm 121 tells us that He never slumbers nor sleeps, while Psalm 3 says, "But thou O Lord are a shield for me, my glory and the lifter up of mine head. I laid down and slept, I awaked, for the Lord sustained me." How reassuring that I need not toss and turn all night. I donīt need to lose sleep by fretting and worrying since Heīs going to be up anyway and He is watching over me, sus- taining me. It is something that does not come automatically. It took me years to learn to lay my problems at His feet and go to bed with the assurance that He is in control and that He is working out all things for my good and His glory and that nothing is outside of His divine providence.

He states that two sparrows are sold for just a few pennies and not one of them falls on the ground without Him know- ing, so to not fear because we are of more value than many sparrows. I can be confident that He will give me the wisdom, the guidance, the direction, plus the solution, for each and every obstacle that occurs in my life because it also says that He will perfect all which concerns me. Great liberty and peace of mind come with that awareness of His omnipotence and omniscience.

Psalm 34 gives us greater insight into how He spends His time. It says that "the eyes of the Lord are upon the right- eous, and His ears are open unto their cry" and that "the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delighteth in his way." Who are these righteous? Iīm glad you asked. They are those that are in right standing with Him. How do we obtain right standing? By "confessing with our mouth that Jesus Christ is our Lord and by believing in our heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10: 9 & 10). He made it so incredibly easy.

God is not only busy guiding and caring for His people, he is busy supplying our needs. I have written on this subject before, but I will quote it again: "My God shall supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." That includes financial, physical, spiritual and emotional.

He is busy giving peace. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in Thee." Those who trust in Him, whose thoughts are turned to the Lord, will live with incredible peace. Peace of mind, peace of heart and peace in the midst of any storm even when it looks like your ship is about to sink.

Finally, most everyone knows Psalm 23, where He states that He walks with us, especially when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We do not need to fear any evil because His rod and His staff comforts us. When faced with illness, surgery or the death of a loved one, His solace soothes our pain. He adds in Isaiah 49 that "He comforts His people, and will have compassion upon them in their sorrow." Another Isaiah scripture says, "Fear thou not: for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee: yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

God spends ALL of His time caring for us and walking with us through ALL the circumstances of life. Itīs a very big job. Iīm glad He didnīt think I was a waste of time.
