Just about every person I have ever met, who did not have an intimate and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, always said the same things when asked where they thought that they would spend eternity.
Categorically the answer was always, "I´m basically a nice person. I don´t do anybody any harm," or else, "I go to church every Sunday." Each of these people believe that they have their ticket to heaven. Although they might be living exemplary lives, this is not the case. The reality is that hell is full of ´good´ people and it is only sinners saved by grace that can enter into heaven.
The prophet Isaiah explains the condition of mankind as viewed by a holy and almighty God. He said, "we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." So it is apparent that there is nothing we can say or do that could purchase our redemption. All the way from Adam until now there has been only one that was born and lived without sin, and that was Jesus who was 100% human while at the same time 100% divine. Therefore it is only the blood of Jesus that can cleanse us from this unrighteousness and it was His precious blood that purchased our salvation.
At the ´Last Supper´ Jesus lifted up the cup and said, "This is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for the remission of sins." (Matt. 26:28)
Under the old covenant, prior to Jesus, people could only approach God through a priest and the blood of a sacrificial animal. Because Jesus was the perfect, sinless ´Lamb of God´ His blood obtained forgiveness for all those who would come to Him by faith. This is the New Covenant.
Scripture says, ´we are saved by grace, through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.´ We do not get to heaven by our own good works. It is the completed and eternal work of Christ on the cross that has made the way for us to be made right with God and allows us to become children of the Most High God.
This is why religion is not the answer. Religion is a man-made invention. Jesus hated religion. He always spoke out strongly against the religious leaders of that time because they were following traditions of men rather than loving God with all their hearts. Plus, there are hundreds of religions. There are as many as there are opinions so going to a church or mosque or synagogue will not make you right with God either. Religion lets people suppose that ´any god will do´. Well it was not ´any god´ that came and laid down His life for mankind. It was Jesus, ´the Alpha and Omega, who suffered and died and then rose from the dead.´ And it is only through Him that we can enter heaven. Salvation is free, but it is not cheap --- it cost Jesus His life.
If your opinion differs from mine, please consider the warning in Proverbs 14:12 which says that ´there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death´.
Just as a parent, because of their love for their child, warns that child that playing in traffic will get them killed, God is admonishing us that ´all roads do not lead to Rome´. He has made it clear in His word that the ONLY way is through Jesus, who is ´the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that no man can come to the Father but through Him.´ (John 14:6)
The apostle Paul also warned in Galatians 1:8 , "If we or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." In this scripture Paul actually invoked a curse on any angel or person who would preach a false gospel. His words are strong and they need to be very strong because it is a matter of life-and-death, the ramifications of which will follow you into eternity.
