For more than one week now I had been fasting and earnestly seeking God because I simply did not know how to respond to this horrible tragedy which is of such biblical proportions that it is being described as ‘hell on earth’. I can hardly fathom the devastation. I find it overwhelming as I watch and listen and cry.
There is no shortage of opinions, as people try to connect the dots and explain why something like Katrina would happen and bring such destruction and suffering to this nation and why God would remove His protective covering. There is much information circulating explaining the correlation between the forced and mandatory Gaza/Samaria evacuation, which happened just the week before, and the New Orleans evacuation. This is based on the major role which the United States just played in dividing Israel’s covenant land. (Joel 3:2 KJV) A land which God promised to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3) and at the same time told him that He would bless those that blessed him (the nation of Israel) and curse those that cursed him. There is also much discussion about the very blatant immorality and moral decay that is especially rampant in New Orleans and the unbelievable perversion which is becoming a crisis because we are allowing it to spread throughout this nation.
It is very probable. Whenever we turn our backs on God and live in rebellion to Him and His precepts we tie His hands. He will not force us to worship Him. He will not force us to serve Him. Yet I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is standing in the midst of this crisis with His arms outstretched ready and waiting to welcome those that would run to Him so He can alleviate their suffering. People are precious to Him. So precious that He Himself came and laid down His life on the cross for each and every one. Ultimately, God’s desire always is that mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:13 KJV) That is why God does not do anything without first declaring it through His prophets. (Amos 3: 7 & 8) Because He wants to prevent further tragedy just as He did in the prophet Jonah’s day. When Jonah cried and preached repentance to the city of Ninevah, telling them that the city would be destroyed in 40 days unless they repented, it resulted in everyone from the King to the animals fasting for 40 days. They repented in sackcloth and God’s heart was moved with compassion and judgment was delayed. Sadly, Ninevah was eventually destroyed because she only repented for a season.
Think back to September 11, 2001. Millions poured through the doors of their local churches and cried out to God. Did the pastors and the preachers and the prophets proclaim the truth of God’s word so as to have a lasting effect on these people? Were they told to change their ways? Or did they proclaim a watered-down, mixed message instead, so that people would feel good about themselves? Was that the reason why most people went back to their old ways? Was it a message that brought absolutely no conviction of sin and that upset noone? Well, that kind of message simply causes hell’s population to enlarge.
If you knew that the bible said that worse things were coming, and that this planet has an expiration date, wouldn’t you sound the alarm? Wouldn’t you resound the warnings of Jesus, written for these closing days of time, loud and clear? "For nations will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilence, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows ... then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many, and because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold..... For there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be." (Matthew 24: NKJV)
There were only a few prophets that pointed out these scriptures and warned that worse things were on the horizon unless we all wept tears of repentance and turned back to God. I remember David Wilkerson saying that what happened in New York City was not the devastation he saw in the vision that God had given him because God showed him a much greater and worse calamity with unimaginable looting, killing and anarchy.
Can this be avoided? ... Yes , we can run back into His arms instead of living in rebellion to Him. We can once again become the nation that is a beacon to the rest of the world. It is not too late. The evil can be restrained as we heed the words in Jude verse 21, ‘stay always within the boundaries where God’s love can reach you and bless you. Wait patiently for the eternal life that our Lord Jesus Christ in His mercy is going to give you.’
