So many of you expressed how much you enjoyed my article about Fiona that it has inspired me to tell you about her husband John. I promise you, you will love hearing about him even more. I just wish you could hear him tell this story, with his thick English accent and subtle, dry sense of humor. I know you would just roll on the floor. You would also not be able to miss the message that God will part the heavens to man- ifest His love for us. Espec- ially for those of us who don´t yet know Him or know of His glorious love.
First I have to ask you, do I look like a hell, fire and brim- stone preacher? ´Of course not !´, you say, ´ those preachers wear black suits and have handlebar mustaches and wave their bibles high in the air, above their heads, while yelling ´THUS SAITH THE LORD!´
I agree with you. Those are my sentiments exactly. But the truth is, I SOUND like one. I really do. You see, I´m constantly saying, ´it is written´ which is a colloquial for ´thus saith the Lord´ and I often expound, ´You need Jesus to be saved´. You wouldn´t know it to look at me, but I do. I really do.
Sixteen years ago, when I met Fiona and she ´took´ (which is my own translation of her conversion) she begged me to hide my bible when I was around her husband and to not say Hallelujah as much. Her concern was that he would think that she was becoming a fanatic. A word, which by the way means, a fan, or a devoted admirer. N-o-t possible. This was like asking a duck not to swim or a bird not to sing. So, I just continued to wave my King James Version all over Fiona´s kitchen.
John, while pretending to hide behind his newspaper in the living room, would be leaning so far towards the kitchen that he would just about topple off his chair trying to hear what it was that we were discussing. Since I knew that Fiona had five churches full of saints praying that John would come to the knowledge of God and ask Him into his heart and life and since I believe to the depth of my being that God answers prayer, I ran in and out of her house proclaiming, "God´s going to get you John." Meaning of course , ´ you might as well give up John. Just surrender your life to Him now, because, you see John, there are so many people praying for you, asking God to make Himself real to you and reveal Himself to you, that you are just making it difficult on everyone, including God by pretend- ing to be so disinterested and agnostic. God´s going to SAVE you, John. You don´t stand a chance!´ Seemed very reasonable and clear to me!
This scenario continued for nine months. Fiona fervently praying but all the while hiding how often she went to church and how deep her commitment and excitement for the things of God really was. John nonchalantly continued to give the impression he was immersed in the daily news and that he was oblivious to our very presence , yet he was trying feverishly to hear and decipher every word which I was deliberately and loudly projecting his way.
Then unexpectedly, while vacationing at a cottage which had an outside staircase that lead to the second story balcony on which John was standing, he was knocked down the flight of stairs by a bolt of lightening. He wasn´t burned. He wasn´t knocked unconscious. He was just flat on his back on the ground at the bottom of the stairs. He relates that all he could hear going over and over in his head was ´Donna Martonfi´s voice stating, God´s GOING TO GET YOU´. Now you all know that is NOT what I meant. John on the other hand, wasn´t certain of anything except that he should have been dead, but was not. He deliberated very seriously about God and wondered why his life was spared and about how close he came to dying.
The next day, still very rattled by the incident, he decided to go fishing and mull over events of past, present and future. The lake was quiet, calm and serene. He stopped about the middle and lowered anchor. Out of a clear blue sky , with not a cloud in sight, again a bolt of lightening hit and knocked him right out of the boat, into the water. Again he says he heard Donna Martonfi´s voice stating, ´ God´s going to get you John´ Right there in the middle of the lake, he raised his arms toward heaven and shouted, ´God, I´m yours. I´m turning my life over to you."
What are the odds? I´m not even going to pretend to under- stand the ramifications and complexities of it all. I do know that God loved John tremendously. He loves you and me so much that He came to earth and gave His life selflessly, so that you and I and John can have eternal life. Jesus could have summoned thousands of angels to His aid yet He silently suffered beatings and floggings at the hands of cruel men, while those angels cringed, to pay the penalty of our sin. He willingly laid down His life so that we would not be eternally separated from Him and He reconciled us to Himself through the shedding of His precious blood. He rose again from the dead and sits at the right hand of God the Father, waiting to share His glory with those who call upon His name. You´re probably wondering what´s happened to John . Oh he´s out there preaching hell, fire and brimstone, advocating ´God´s going to GET you!´
Incidentally, did you know that Venice, where I live, is the lightening capital of the world?
