IF YOU´RE GONNA HAVE A FIGHT -- AT LEAST HAVE IT IN PUBLIC
You are probably already asking, "You had a FIGHT ? In PUBLIC?" I did. I relish being different. Unpredictable too. This at least has always kept my friends on their toes. My husband on the other hand has just learned to grin and ignore it.
This was not a ´fight´ fight, it was really only a loud argument. Not even your typical ordinary argument, as my friend Fiona and I found out. I met Fiona one day when she happened to stumble into a prayer meeting. God had never been an integral part of her life. She wasn´t even certain that He existed, but had come to investigate, never- theless.
She developed an instant appetite for the things of God. She rattled off questions faster than we could answer them. Reminded me of myself. I liked her instantly. Since this one meeting could not even begin to satisfy her hunger nor the fire that was ignited in her soul, I invited her to a donut shop where I attempted to fill in the blanks all the way from the book of Genesis right through to Revelation. All in one sitting, yet. It is possible. I´ve tried it many times. (smile) I have a propensity for dragging people off to rest- aurants, until the wee hours of the morning , trying to teach them everything I know. With Fiona, it all stuck. She became a carbon copy. I would start a sentence and she could finish it. Mostly, we just both talked at the same time, because it saved time. We were continuously busy telling everyone, everywhere, all the time, about the Lord. We were a great team, with a lot of zeal and much passion.
One day the pupil surpassed teacher and that´s when this argument occurred. My book was hot of the press and Fiona had just read an excerpt that she was thought was all wrong. She was convinced that she had given a particular insight to a group of ladies instead of me. For more than an hour we sat in a fast food restaurant battling it out, oblivious to anyone around us. We sat facing each other, holding hands across the table, and as was our bent, we both talked at the same time, each trying to vehemently persuade the other that ´she´ was right.
When I told her to close her eyes and recall how the leader of the group had asked me to stop, she realized that it would have had to be me speaking. Tears burst from her eyes as she agreed that she had been wrong and couldn´t understand why she remembers making those remarks. We concluded that it was because she was such a good student and had probably used the same references either at work or someplace else. I´m certain you can envision the scene that followed
Our rambling was abruptly halted when a discomfiting voice interjected, "This can not be happening! I did not hear what I think I just heard!"
Startled we turned in the direction of the unexpected intrusion. The comments were coming from a spiffy looking lady who was obviously a business woman because she was packing a briefcase, a pager and a car phone. She seemed visibly astonished.
"The two of you have just re-arranged my day. I´m not going back to work. I´m going home to think about what I just witnessed. I have never heard or seen such love. This is unreal."
LOVE ??? We were having a fight!
Fiona, being the great protégé, scoots over to this ladies´ table and starts gushing about Jesus and His love. Like an Artesian well she just started splashing all over this woman. I ran to the car to retrieve a copy of my book for this potential reader.
You must have already guessed the rest. That lady never did get to work that day. Fiona and I, trying NOT to talk at the same time, fed her a dose of God´s Word, trying to cover everything from Genesis all the way to Revelation . I emphasize the word trying. But, that lady´s life did change that very day. Fiona got her phone number and continued to mentor a brand new believer in the ways of God, just as she had seen me do for her. They became friends, too.
"A new command I give unto you; that you love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you have love one to another." John 13: 34 & 35
Ephesians 5:2 "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us ....." yadda, yadda, yadda.
